Extra Curricular
MUSIC
Carena van Riper grew up in a family of musicians and has been
deeply involved in the arts throughout her life. Carena played the flute and
piano for 13 years, five of which were spent performing in the Flagstaff Youth
Orchestra. She regularly attended music camps, played in her high school marching band
and attended a music preparatory academy for one year of high school. After
shifting from music to science during her undergraduate career, Carena became
more involved with electronic music and began to deejay under the alias of
"Quintessence." For over two years, she was affiliated with the
Dirt Assasinz Embassy™
based out of Phoenix, AZ, during which time
she traveled to Las Vegas, NV and Miami, FL to attend electronic music conferences. Currently,
Carena plays progressive house and trance music in her leisure time.
SPORTS
Sports also played an important role in Miss van Riper’s life. Carena played
outside center and
wing for the Arizona
State University Women’s Rugby
Team. As an undergraduate, she was a member of the ASU
Snowdevil's snowboard
club, a Jujitsu club, and a Capoeira grupo. Carena ran cross country, track,
played soccer,
and volleyball in high school, was a
member of an American Kenpo dojo for
several years, and also barrel raced for seven years with her horse, Morgan.
More recently,
Carena has reinvigorated
a desire to run
long-distance races. While completing her
Master's degree at
the UVM, she
joined competed in
two
half marathons and several shorter races in
the northeastern
US.
TRAVEL EXPERIENCES
Throughout Carena’s undergraduate career she punctuated classes with study abroad. Carena studied
international tourism for one summer at University NHTV, Breda, Holland
and spent one year learning Spanish at Universidad Pompeo Fabra, Barcelona, Spain.
Her more recent adventures have led her to northeastern Queensland where she
explored places like the Great Barrier Reef, outback and the Daintree
Rainforest. Her additional travel experiences include attending a conference and participating in a safari in South Africa from June 2000-July 2000. Visiting Belgium, France, England, Ireland, Switzerland from July 2002-Aug 2003. Traveling to Canada from June 2004-July 2004, Portugal from April 2005-May 2005 and Germany in June 2005, as well as the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary in July of 2005.
